What Is Electrology?

Electrology is the profession dedicated to the science, study, and practice of permanent hair removal. Electrologists are highly trained professionals who permanently remove unwanted hair using electrolysis, a treatment performed through one of three modalities: galvanic, thermolysis, or blend. Each modality works differently, allowing the electrologist to customize treatment based on the patient's hair type, skin characteristics, treatment goals, and medical needs.

An electrologist is the practitioner who specializes in permanent hair removal through electrolysis. While electrologists often work alongside physicians, surgeons, dermatologists, endocrinologists, and laser hair removal specialists, our profession is distinct. Electrologists are not laser hair removal technicians, nor are we medical clinicians. Instead, we are specialists in permanently destroying hair follicles through precision treatment, providing an essential service that complements both cosmetic and medically necessary care.

Electrolysis has been the trusted standard for permanent hair removal for well over a century.

During treatment, a sterile, single-use filament is gently inserted into the natural opening of each hair follicle. A carefully controlled electrical current is then delivered to permanently destroy the follicle's ability to produce another hair, allowing the treated hair to be removed without force. Because the treatment targets the follicle rather than the hair's pigment, electrolysis is effective on every hair color—including blond, red, gray, and white—and every skin tone, making it the only permanent hair removal method suitable for all patients.

Unlike temporary methods such as shaving, waxing, threading, or depilatory creams, electrolysis provides a permanent solution through a series of customized treatments that correspond with the hair's natural growth cycle. It is equally effective for treating a few isolated hairs or developing comprehensive treatment plans for larger areas of the body.

Today, electrology plays an increasingly important role in healthcare. It is widely used for gender-affirming care, surgical preparation, PMOS (formerly PCOS)-related hair growth, hirsutism, hypertrichosis, and other medically necessary conditions. It also complements laser hair removal by permanently treating the lighter hairs that laser cannot effectively target, making the two technologies powerful partners in achieving complete, long-term hair removal.

As the demand for permanent hair removal continues to grow, electrologists remain at the forefront of delivering safe, individualized, evidence-based care that changes lives—one follicle at a time.

Certification Readiness

Are you non certified electrologist seeking training under a Certified Professional Electrologist?

At Zap Master Electrology, we frequently receive inquiries from individuals who have undergone electrolysis training but face challenges sitting for national exams due to their training methods. Our tailored programs address this need, catering to those pursuing national certification or requiring comprehensive theory coverage alongside their hands-on training with a local electrologist.

320-hour program combining Theory and Hands-On training at $8,500.00,

there is a  $250.00 registration fee.

This initiative aims to support practitioners seeking national certification under the guidance of a Certified Professional Electrologist. It's particularly beneficial for those in unlicensed states traveling to our facility for training. Students must complete 75% of the 200-hour theory component online before commencing in-person classes at Zap Master. However, local trainers may opt to start hands-on training earlier at their discretion, with remote guidance provided for successful implementation. We strive to facilitate a comprehensive and flexible learning experience for all enrolled students.

A Modern Blended Learning Experience

Our students complete foundational learning through the Milady CIMA Learning Management System while participating in our custom Google Classroom, where assignments, resources, announcements, and collaboration are organized in one place.

The classroom experience doesn't stop when an online module is complete. Instead, students bring what they've learned into an instructor-led environment where concepts are expanded, challenged, and applied through real-world discussion and clinical examples. This immersive approach transforms online learning into meaningful professional understanding.

Zapling Hour

A cornerstone of the Zap Master experience is Zapling Hour, our signature lecture and discussion series.

Over the past three years, Zapling Hour has grown into an extensive educational archive featuring hundreds of hours of recorded lectures covering clinical techniques, hair biology, business development, professional ethics, technology, gender-affirming care, case studies, and emerging research in electrology.

Students have access to this growing library while actively participating in current coursework, allowing them to revisit previous lectures and continue learning beyond the classroom.

New for Fall 2026

Beginning in Fall 2026, Zapling Hour is evolving into a more flexible and engaging learning experience.

Students will participate in four one-hour instructor-led classes each week, providing shorter, focused learning sessions that fit naturally into clinical training and independent study.

Each class includes:

  • Live instructor-led lecture
  • Recorded sessions for future review
  • Guided classroom discussions
  • Critical thinking exercises
  • Professional case studies
  • Participation-based learning activities
  • Graded discussion responses and engagement

This format encourages students to think critically, ask questions, defend clinical decisions, and learn collaboratively with classmates and instructors.

Rather than simply memorizing information, students learn how to apply evidence-based principles to real patient scenarios and develop the confidence expected of today's professional electrologists.

Education That Continues Beyond Graduation

Because every Zapling Hour is recorded and archived, our educational library continues to grow each year. Students and alumni gain access to an expanding collection of lectures, discussions, and professional development resources that support lifelong learning throughout their careers.
